Moms know everything

Tonight was a talkative time for Tovrea. He likes to share about things in his day right before he falls asleep. I often ask him questions when he arrives home from school and I get bits and pieces of his day, but at night it all comes out.  This is when I hear about the boys that kiss girls, games that get played, or who got in trouble today.  It is also when I hear what he is excited about learning...usually science and math! I also sometimes learn about his fears, insecurities, and his thoughts.  Tonight it was about how moms are suppose to know everything.   Ut-oh, dangerous territory...I can pull this off with a five or six year old but with a seven and a half year old it is getting kinda tricky! Then by the time he is nine he won't think I am suppose to know everything anymore...ohhh!

I tried explaining that the concept behind "moms knowing everything" is more that they always have advice for their older children and that the younger ones are happy with any kind of answers moms give to an onslaught of questions.  Such as, "Why is the sky blue"? ~ "Cuz, it's my favorite color" ....Oh wait...what did I just say?...now I'm in for it...here it comes...

"Mom, really, why is the sky blue?"  I did not say anything and luckily for me he wanted to tell me the answer.  Phew!!!
"....Because there are several layers to the sun, the first is yellow, the second is  orange and the third is blue. All the layers of sun light shine through the molecules in the sky and because there are so many molecules stuck together the third layer from the sun shines through the most since it is the brightest and the darkest and so blue is the color that shows through the molecules."

Hmmm, ok.  He's asleep and I'm Googling...

It turns out that the official answer is something quite similar-

Sunlight is made up of all different colors of light, but because of the elements in the atmosphere the color blue is scattered much more efficiently than the other colors. The blueness you see everywhere else is all of the atoms in the atmosphere scattering blue light toward you. Because red light, yellow light, green light and the other colors aren't scattered nearly as well, you see the sky as blue.

Ahhh, he just wants me to listen to what he knows and so it really doesn't matter that I don't know everything...for now anyway!

  1. What a GREAT story Rach!!
You made me laugh with the line: "Hmmm, ok. He's asleep and I'm Googling..." I could see you in your computer checking out Tovrea's version.
What a sense of pride you must have felt realizing that your sweet, sensitive son had it right and loves Science as well...
