May reading time was filled with a few new books and some old favorites. New to our book shelves this month was Giraffes Can't Dance, Three by the Sea, A Sick Day for Amos McGee, The Listeners, and Archie and the Pirates.
Giraffes Can't Dance by Giles Andreae
A sweet story about a giraffe that does not quite fit into any group and is a little awkward. He learns that since he is different he just needs a different song to fit his style. Soon he's dancing away, gaining the attention of those who told him Giraffes Can't Dance...
Three by the Sea by Mini Grey
Three friends-a dog, a cat and a mouse happily live together, until one day a fast talking fox appears and disrupts their happy lives by bringing in the Winds of Change Trading Co. Will the friendships remain true or will the changes tear them apart?
A Sick Day for Amos McGee
by Philip C Stead
Amos takes care of his animal friends at the zoo everyday loving and caring for all their needs. The animals return the care and attention when one day Amos is too sick to come to the zoo, so the animals find a way to visit him at home.
The Listeners by Gloria Whelan
Ella May and her friends listen outside the masters window- who will be sold or who will be kept? They are salves and live on a plantation. The little listeners are first to hear all the news and first to have hope, when the promise of freedom is spoken by a new president, Abraham Lincoln. (Historical Fiction)
Archie and The Pirates by Mark Rosenthal
A shipwrecked monkey, a sweet-singing ibis, a ferocious tiger, and a band of rough, smelly, no-good pirates! Coconuts fly, danger lurks, and only one clever monkey can save the day: Archie! Our new favorite, this one has Tovrea and CoCo laughing out loud!!
Some old favorites that we love to read are the Fancy Nancy series and Biscuit books. Quiny loves Biscuit and would choose to read one or both of these books every night: Biscuit's Snowy Day and Biscuit's Walk in the Woods.
We also enjoyed When I was a Boy...I Dreamed and When I was a Girl...I Dreamed books by a talented local author, Matott. Each story is written in a rhythmic nature that keeps the kids captivated with each page's new dream.
And, lastly, I can't forget Elmer's New Friend, Quiny really likes Elmer and this book describes who this new and surprising friend is going to be, the last page reveals the friend in a mirror...Quiny smiles..."Me!".
What a GREAT idea to teach History at a very young age, and through such sweet books!
ReplyDeleteMy first favorite from this month's list is The Listeners and my second one is A Sick Day for Amos McGee...Good reading guys!!
